Akelei
Aquilegias
I'm always very happy to have friendly self-seeders in the garden. Now is the time of year when you have to weed very carefully and look closely to see if the seedlings are friend or foe. And if they are friend, do you have it under control or are you just losing it? Columbine is one of those flowers where I have lost control before because in my delight and enthusiasm the plants were able to seed themselves carefree and had conquered half the bed. It wasn't until the next spring that I realised the bed was almost all columbine, and not only that, most of the seedlings were pink, the dominant gene. It looked nice as long as it was flowering, but after that there was hardly anything left in the bed.
