Die Tulpen legen los: die Rabatten-Saison fängt an!

Trotz Sommerwetter ist es immer noch Frühling. Man könnte auch denken es ist Sommer. Während die Temperaturen für das Wochenende hochschießen, sind viele beschäftigt mit dem Gedanken darüber, was sie wohl für das Barbecue kaufen werden, welches Sommeroutfit zuerst ausgeführt wird und wo sind die Sommerschuhen geblieben? 

Die Frühlingstemperaturen sind wohl ungewöhnlich mild gewesen, sodass die Natur schon viel weiter ist als sonst, aber es ist leicht zu vergessen das wir erst Anfang April sind. Vor mehreren Wochen fragten Kunden schon nach Sommerblühern, wobei wir sie nochmal daran erinnern mussten, dass es erst Ende Februar war. Ein Zeitpunkt an dem wir erst anfangen die Gärtnerei wieder zu bestücken. Der Winter hätte nochmal zurückkommen können. 

The tulips are getting going: the border season is starting!

Despite the summer weather, it's still spring. You might even think it's summer. As weekend temperatures soar, many are busy thinking about what to buy for the barbecue, which summer outfit to wear first and where have those summer shoes gone? 

The spring temperatures have been unusually mild, so nature is much further advanced than usual, but it's easy to forget that it's only the beginning of April. Several weeks ago, customers were already asking for summer flowers, when we had to remind them that it was only the end of February, a time when we are just starting to restock the nursery, and that winter could still return. 

Auch wenn Sie die Sommerterrasse jetzt einweihen, steht das Frühjahr immer noch auf dem Programm. Die Tulpen legen los und bei dieser Hitze werden sie sich rasant entwickeln.  

Seit einigen Wochen haben wir wieder unsere Tulpenshow aufgebaut. Zu finden ist sie auf der kleinen Terrasse vor dem Wurzelhaus, wo Kunden sie inspizieren können und auch schon Vorbestellungen für den Herbst tätigen können. Einige Zwiebeln hatten wir letzten Herbst für den Verkauf getopft, sodass die Ungeduldigen gleich schon was zum Mitnehmen und anfangen haben, während sie abwarten das die Zwiebeln im Herbst kommen.

Even if you are inaugurating the summer terrace now, spring is still on the programme. The tulips are starting to take off, and in this heat they will develop rapidly. 

Since a few weeks we have set up our tulip show again on the small terrace in front of the root house where customers can inspect them and also pre-order for the autumn. We potted some bulbs for sale last autumn so that impatient gardeners have something to take away and start right away while they wait for the bulbs to arrive in autumn.

Die Besonderheit liegt im Detail

Wenn sie Zeit haben, schauen sie vorbei und nehmen Sie sich ein wenig Zeit, um die Ausstellung zu sehen. Obwohl viele der Zwiebeln auch im danebengelegene Staudenbeet oder auch in andere Beete auf unserem Gelände blühen, ist es nochmal anders, wenn man sie nah dran im Detail beobachten und eventuell auch riechen kann, einige duften nämlich. Im Beet ist es schön sie im Kontext zu sehen mit welchen benachbarten Pflanzen sie sich besonders schön assoziieren, aber die Details, die oft das Besondere an eine Sorte ausmachen, verliert sich im Gesamtbild. Es kann der Duft sein, die Außenseite der Blätter, das Innere, die Staubblätter, der Rand oder die Markierungen. Wenn Sie in der Nähe wohnen, kommen Sie bitte später im Monat nochmal zurück, um die späteren Sorten zu genießen! 

The speciality lies in the detail

If you have time, stop by and take some time to see the exhibition. Although many also flower in the neighbouring herbaceous border or in other beds on our premises, it is even more special when you can observe them up close in detail and possibly even smell them, as some are fragrant. In the border it is nice to see them in context with which neighbouring plants they associate particularly well, but the detail that often makes a variety special gets lost in the overall picture. It can be the scent, the outside of the petals, the inside, the stamens, the edge, or the markings. If you live nearby, please come back once more later in the month to enjoy the later varieties! 

Begleitpflanzen

Nur Tulpen finde ich immer sehr nackt im Beet. Es sieht sofort besser aus, wenn sie von anderen Pflanzen umgeben sind, auch wenn es nur interessante Blattpflanzen sind. Die frühen Stauden, wie Akelei, sind immer großartige Begleiter, aber ich liebe den Purpur-Wiesen-Kerbel Anthriscus sylvestris ‘Ravenswing‘, da er sich während der Blütezeit der Zwiebeln rasant entwickelt und in voller Blüte steht, bis sie fast vorbei sind und damit völlig ablenkt vom braunwerdenden Laub der Zwiebeln.

Ein toller Compagnon in unsere Rabatte ist Euphorbia palustris. Wir haben ‘Walenburg’s Glorie‘, der mir eigentlich zu groß geworden ist und ersetzt ihn deshalb durch eine etwas kompaktere Sorte wie ‘Teichlaterne‘. Deren leuchtend grüne Farbe um diese Jahreszeit großartig ist und traumhaft zu jeder Blütenfarbe passt.

Vergiss-Mein-Nicht ist ein Klassiker, und wird oft noch als Begleitpflanzen in klassischer Wechselflorbepflanzung gebraucht. Wir haben welchen im Staudenbeet, der sich seit 16 Jahren selbständig im Beet vermehrt hat und dort blüht wo er Lust hat. Das passt mir gut, ist allerdings nicht so zuverlässig als eine feste Staude, von der man weiß, wo sie jedes Jahr stehen wird. Daher empfehle ich das Kaukasusvergissmeinnicht Brunnera macrophylla. Im Beet haben wir ‘Jack Frost‘ dessen silber-panaschierte Blätter auch nach der Blüte noch attraktiv sind. Eine andere, sehr empfehlenswerte Sorte ist ‘Silver Heart‘. Falls sie auf Weiß stehen, gibt es die weiß-blühende Sorte ‘Mr Morse‘.

Companion plants

I always find that tulips alone are very naked in the border. It always looks better when they are surrounded by other plants, even if they are just interesting foliage plants. The early perennials like columbine are all great companions, but I love the purple Cow Parsley Anthriscus sylvestris 'Ravenswing' as it develops rapidly while the bulbs are flowering and is in full flower by the time the bulbs are almost over, completely distracting from the browning foliage of the tulips.

A great companion in our border is Euphorbia palustris. We have 'Walenburg's Glorie', which has actually grown too big in my opinion and could be replaced by a slightly more compact variety such as 'Teichlaterne'. Its bright green colour at this time of year is great and goes beautifully with any flower colour. 

Forget-me-not is a classic, and is often still used as a companion plant in classic spring bedding planting schemes. We have some in our herbaceous border that has been growing spontaneously in the border for 16 years and flowers wherever it feels like it. This suits me well, but is not as reliable as a permanent perennial, of which you know where it will be each year. That's why I recommend Brunnera macrophylla. In the border we have 'Jack Frost' whose silver variegated leaves are still attractive after flowering, but another variety that comes highly recommended is 'Silver Heart'. If you like white, the white-flowered variety 'Mr Morse' is interesting.

Frühe und Späte Tulpen

Wie bei den Narzissen gibt es früh-blühende Sorten und späte Tulpen. Ich lasse mich gerne von den einzelnen Blütendetails verführen, aber es lohnt sich echt darauf zu achten, wann sie blühen sollen. Dieses Jahr sind sie zwar früher dran und auch die späten Sorten werden schneller auftauchen als sonst. Man kann trotzdem die Tulpenzeit um mindestens drei bis vier Wochen verlängern, wenn man die richtige Wahl trifft und einige frühe als auch späte Sorten aussucht. Wichtig ist von jeder Gruppe mindestens zwei oder drei Sorten zu haben, um ein durchgängig schönes Display zu haben. Besonders wenn Sie sich eine besondere Farbkombination ausgesucht haben, achten sie auch darauf, dass sie zeitlich kompatibel sind, sodass nicht eine viel früher anfängt und schon verblüht ist, während eine andere erst anfängt. Das gleich gilt natürlich auch für Kübel! 

Staudenmarkt

Dieses Wochenende gibt es endlich wieder den schönen Staudenmarkt mit seinen vielen, besonderen Pflanzenanbietern, dieses Mal allerdings in der Domäne Dahlem, wo Sie uns besuchen können. Wir werden erstmalig auch einen Stand haben, unter anderem mit unserm großen Assortiment von besonderen Einjährigen aus eigener Produktion, produziert in torffreier Bio-Erde in kompostierbaren Töpfen aus Sonnenblumen-Schalen gepresst.

Early and late tulips

As with daffodils, there are early-flowering varieties and late tulips. I like to be seduced by the individual flower details, but it's really worth paying attention to when they are due to flower. This year they are earlier, and the late varieties will come up sooner than usual, but you can still extend the tulip season by at least three to four weeks if you make the right choice and select some early as well as late varieties. It is important to have at least two or three varieties from each group in order to have a consistently beautiful display. Especially if you have chosen a particular colour combination, make sure that they are compatible in time, so that one does not start much earlier and is already faded when another is only just starting. 

The same applies to containers, of course! 

Perennial plant fair

At long last this weekend  “Der Staudenmarkt”, the beautiful plant fair is back again with its many specialist plant suppliers, but this time in the Domäne Dahlem. You can visit us there, as for the first time we will also have a stand there. Among other things, we will present our large assortment of special annuals which we grow ourselves, produced in peat-free organic compost,  in compostable pots made from sunflower seeds.
